NEW SINGLE & VIDEO: “CHILL” a new stylistic twist further completes the STIR circle. …And a new interview by RGM Press
CHILL is my soundscape that embraces “funk school” jazz, a convergence of west coast “cool” jazz and funk, originally evolving from the soul and r&b styles. It can be argued that this emerging new style gave serious energy to the pop and rock sides of funk music as well during their heyday.
The singular figure in this movement was Miles Davis, roundly criticized at the time for supposedly “dumbing down” jazz, but in hindsight is universally considered a genius for doing so. His keyboard players during this period, Chick Corea (rip) and Herbie Hancock, are both musical heroes of mine, and have helped shape parts of how I approach music. Thanks go to all three. Herbie Hancock is the remaining survivor today.
There is no implied storyline in this piece, nor its music video. How could there be?
It’s above all else: about the V-I-B-E.
So just chill.
Peace.
This may appear as a complete deviation from my previous work.
Is it ?
How does it hang with my other compositions?
I’ve been awaiting the coming reviews.
So what are they all saying about this thing??
“Marc Soucy is back, and his latest track “Chill” does exactly what the name promises: it eases you into a smooth, layered soundscape while keeping your ears busy with its intricate details.” — E. Rossi, Best of The Week January 3 2025
“From the first few notes sets the tone with dissonant, intricate piano arpeggios that build a foundation for what becomes an evolving sonic experience. Soucy is clearly a master at creating a sense of fluid motion in his compositions, never allowing the music to settle into predictable patterns. …The real surprise comes midway through… a moment that feels like stepping into a smoky jazz bar in 1980s New York.” — Edgar Allen Poets January 3 2025
“Perhaps this is Marc Soucy’s greatest merit - making us feel in a place we have never been, in a time that perhaps not even he lived, all this with a current sound. …Soucy is on the right path to becoming a rising name in the music scene.” — Jessica Marinho, Brazil December 30 2024
“Soucy's approach is both calculated and instinctive, producing patterns that feel organic despite their complexity. The rhythm's subtle syncopation recalls the improvisational feel of jazz drumming while maintaining the steady undercurrent typical of electronic music, creating a bridge between spontaneity and structure. …“Chill” is a testament to (his) ability to innovate within the electronic music genre while paying homage to the styles that have shaped him.” — Simone Nocentini, Italy December 31 2024
Marc is interviewed by RGM Press January 3 2025
“With “Chill”, instead of going into futurism, spirituality, or human intimacy, this time I explore a moment in culture when music experienced a confluence.
Miles Davis started bringing the new approach to music called funk, to jazz. He got criticized at first but in hindsight he is universally considered a genius for doing that. Its influence is felt all over the music world, and I wanted to acknowledge it. I love creating deeply emotional atmospheres and this is as valid an excuse to do that as any, in my mind.”
